The first thing I remember is the sound of my name cutting through the room.
Not from a sound system.
From Busta Rhymes.
We’re in the Rainbow Room or Emerging Artist, high above Rockefeller Center in New York City, at The Daily Front Row’s Fashion Media Awards during New York Fashion Week, a premier noir moment for culture and style. The space looks unreal – chandeliers, skyline, every table filled with editors, designers, stylists, and artists who live inside the fashion world every day.
And then I hear it.
“Emerging Artist… Ashwin Gane.”
In that split second, everything that started in Detroit – late nights with beats, Mythic Trap ideas, Twilight Tales, Flip Dat, tiny rooms and huge stadiums – suddenly has a seat at one of fashion’s most important tables.
It isn’t just “a win.”
It’s proof that the bridge between hip-hop, cinema, and high fashion is real, and my name is now written across part of it.
Detroit in my chest, New York under my feet
I was not born in a building with chandeliers and glass walls.
I grew up in and around Detroit, where sound systems in cars feel like moving studios and stories carry more weight than any lighting rig. Articles keep calling me a “Detroit-born artist, producer, and fashion-forward creator,” and they’re right – that city is my primary sample pack.

So when I stepped into the Rainbow Room at NYFW, it did not feel like leaving Detroit behind. It felt like carrying it into a new room and seeing how the city’s energy looked under a different kind of spotlight.
Walking into the Rainbow Room at NYFW
The Rainbow Room is one of those spaces you see in photos before you ever feel the floor beneath your shoes.
High above Rockefeller Center. Circular room. The city outside every window. The 12th Annual Fashion Media Awards took over that space on 12 September 2025, with The Daily Front Row honouring editors, stylists, photographers, brands, and, somehow, me as a lifestyle artist.

It’s one thing to imagine yourself in those kinds of rooms. It’s another to actually stand there, knowing your name is on the programme as the recipient of the Emerging Artist Award. At that point, the work is already done – the blogs, the videos, the shows, the branding, the story – and all that’s left is to show up as the same person the work introduced.
What the Emerging Artist Award really meant to me
On the FashionWeekDaily site, the headline is simple:

They described how my approach to hip-hop – eminem impact on hip hop, cinematic trap, world-building, mythic storytelling – is what earned me the Emerging Artist honour at the Fashion Media Awards. It sounds clean and polished when you read it.
Inside my own head, that award meant something slightly different.
On my site, I wrote about it like this: winning the NYFW Daily Front Row Emerging Artist Award felt less like a trophy and more like an invitation. A sign that the culture is willing to see hip-hop not only on stage, but on the runway, in editorial, and in the language of fashion itself.

Busta Rhymes calling my name
I don’t think I’ll ever get fully used to this part.

To have someone who has been a giant in hip-hop – sonically, visually, energetically – speak my name in that room is more than a cool clip. It felt like two generations of world-builders acknowledging each other. His era gave us videos and performances that felt like full universes. I’m trying to do the same with Mythic Trap, Inspector Gane, Twilight Tales, and Flip Dat in this one.
For a few seconds on that stage, those threads were physically connected.
Styling the moment: building a look that matched the story
If you’re going to accept an award at NYFW, what you wear becomes part of the story whether you want it to or not.
Christopher Campbell, a stylist and fashion director who’s been working with me, understands that my music is already cinematic. For the Emerging Artist moment, the goal was simple: look like I could walk straight from the Rainbow Room into a noir scene with Inspector Gane and not break the illusion. Tailoring, fabric, fit, and details were chosen to sit somewhere between Detroit grit and NYFW elegance. The suit had to say “runway” and “case file” at the same time.
From Twilight Tales to Flip Dat: why this award sits on a bigger foundation
A lot of people discovered me for the first time through that NYFW clip. But this night didn’t appear out of nowhere.
Projects like “Twilight Tales” – my cinematic, mythic trap EP – laid the groundwork. Articles from AllHipHop, EIN Presswire, and my own site talk about Twilight Tales as something closer to a horror mythology anthology than a standard rap release.

By the time I set foot on the Rainbow Room floor, fashion media wasn’t just reacting to one song. They were responding to an entire cinematic trap universe that had been quietly structuring itself across music, visuals, events, and writing.
What comes after a night like this
The easy thing to do after an award like this would be to slow down and enjoy it.
